Stock Investing Strategies - The Advantages Of Following The News
When most stockholders think of current events, they tend to think in terms of big events. Although there is an advantage to tracking big events, you need to be aware of small events as well.
Consider minnows for a moment. They are usually ignored because everyone is more interested in catching the big fish, and so leave the little ones alone to provide food for the big fish, as well as in hopes that they will become the big fish. They provide the intermediate level of the local food chain. That makes them vulnerable to any changes above and below. If there are too many big fish, the number of minnows will decrease and the big fish will be forced to eat other big fish to survive. Eventually, the big fish will start dying off, either because there isn't any food or because they ate all of the other fish. Conversely, any issues with the plants and animals below the minnows will affect them as well; pollution or virulent bacteria will eliminate the minnows, as they don't have anything to eat.
This has definite business applications, especially for stockholders. As big companies eat up more smaller companies, the stock of those companies has less effect. Although sometimes it can be a good thing (the extra capital makes for a stronger company), the company can be effectively downsized into oblivion, making the stock useless (no profits, no dividends). Thus a feeding frenzy is usually a bad thing. Conversely, big businesses depend on smaller businesses; caterers, local couriers, and even the local Mom & Pop convenience stores make life a lot easier for big businesses. Eliminate those minnows, and even small businesses disappear, creating chaos up the food chain.
By tracking what affects local businesses, you can more accurately determine which local stocks are better to invest in, and thus guarantee better results from your stock buys. For example, a strike among longshoremen is going to create problems on the local piers, which is going to signal issues with cargo shipping, making freight shipping a bad bet. This also allows you to track seasonal effects, such as heater companies during winter and air conditioning during the summer, as well holiday issues, like flowers and chocolates in early February. By keeping you ear to the ground, you have a serious advantage over other investors, and any advantage is worth having.
